If you are just looking for a device to read comfortably for longer periods of time, clearly, an e-reader is a better choice. In comparison, an e-reader like the Libra H20 does not have as many uses but it does what it does very well. At S$279, it seems more attractive than the Amazon Kindle Oasis, which offer similiar specs at S$372.Īdd to the fact that I can borrow eBooks from Singapore’s local library instead of buying them and the Libra H2O seems a better buy with more savings in the long run.Īnother competitor to the e-reader is a tablet that can do more things, from watching Netflix shows to playing a mobile game or two. The Rakuten Kobo Libra H2O is not cheap, either, but it is competitively priced. This means I might need to bring along another cable on my trips in future, since my phone and other recently launched devices have switched to USB-C ports. Plus, Rakuten has stuck to the old Micro USB port. There is also no way you could expand the 8GB of storage space, which to be fair, also can potentially store 2,000 to 3,000 books. The e-reader’s plastic construction feels a bit cheap. I just sign into the Pocket App in the e-reader and I can read articles like on a book instead of a webpage.ĭespite a mostly positive experience, I do have some complaints. Happily, I can also use the e-reader to read webpages saved from using the Pocket App with my Firefox browser. I just logged into my eLib app to borrow the books and the digital versions are downloaded via the OverDrive app in the e-reader using the steps described on the library website. The most useful feature of the Kobo e-reader is the direct connection to the e-books I have borrowed from Singapore’s National Library. PHOTO: Wilson Wong Connecting to the PC to transfer ePub or PDF documents is just like plugging in your USB flash drive. That could mean another cable to bring on your trips. PHOTO: Wilson Wong Unfortunately, this is the old Micro USB and not the newer USB-C port used by most of today’s new phones. Borrowing from the library is so much easier. I can easily buy books and download from the e-reader’s built-in app or from a PC.Īlternatively, I can transfer unprotected ePub and PDF files to the e-reader’s 8Gb storage space just like with a normal USB thumb drive via the old-fashioned Micro USB port. What is important to the e-reader is the books you can have access to. In other words, reading by the pool or even in the bathtub is not that risky. The Libra H2O is also rated at IPX8, making it waterproof for up to 60 minutes in 2 meters of water. The two page buttons on the side make it easier to flip a page just by using my thumb – it works even if you are a leftie. It is helped by the presence of a “lip” that gives a firmer hold of the device. PHOTO: Wilson WongĪt 192g, it is light enough for me to hold up in my hand for long periods. The buttons allow you to turn the page quickly instead of swiping the screen. ![]() ![]() 600The edge is lifted up to give you a firmer hold. The device comes with a 1,200mAh battery that lasts so long that I did not recharge the device during the entire week I spent testing it. ![]() In the evenings, it gives off a warmer hue that helps to alleviate eye strain caused by blue light. The screen can also change colour depending on the time of the day. You can also customise the e-reader with 12 different fonts and over 50 font styles to your liking. With a 7-inch e-ink Carta display screen that has a resolution similar to a Full HD monitor, it makes reading much more comfortable. Rakuten’s Kobo Libra H2O just might be the gadget to solve these issues. The glare from the screen causes eye fatigue, making it uncomfortable for long reading sessions. PHOTO: Wilson Wongīorrowing an ebook from the National Library of Singapore is easy but reading from a tablet’s screen or your laptop monitor is often not. With the Kobo Libra H2O, I borrowed Bob Woodward’s RAGE from the National Library, saving me S$15.

More recently, we’ve seen a similar surge in AI-related stocks, as investors’ extreme belief in those companies’ bright futures has led to a flood of cash into the shares of the likes of Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, and Apple, as well as a swirl of small start-ups. Shares of EV maker Telsa were up ten-fold from their pandemic lows while shares of hydrogen fuel cell company Plug Power were up twenty-fold. As you would expect, the prices of these instruments, too, mirrored the extreme confidence investors had in that imagined future. Not a year from the pandemic outbreak, investors stampeded into cryptocurrencies, SPACs, meme stocks, and other highly speculative, abstract investments certain that their future would be blisteringly bright. With a mass vaccination effort underway and consumers flush with cash from Washington D.C., there was renewed excitement about innovation and the economic growth it would bring. The stock price of travel related companies like Carnival Cruise Line and American Airlines, for example, collapsed while shares of pizza delivery company Dominoes soared on the expectation that we would be forced to stay home indefinitely.Īt the other end of the sentiment spectrum, in early 2021, we saw the reverse. ![]() With that, market prices precisely mirrored how bad we felt. There was a clear equilibrium between our shared feelings of powerlessness and uncertainty, market narratives and our actions. And at the late-March 2020 lows in confidence, everyone believed things could only get worse and was acting on those feelings and stories-including business leaders and policymakers. As investors panicked, and felt more and more vulnerable, they swapped the unpredictability of stocks for the certainty of cash. In fact, search volume for the term “coronavirus” was all but mirrored by a comparable decline in stock prices. As the outbreak unfolded, the stories we told ourselves and others about what was ahead became bleaker and bleaker. Three years ago, you could watch our imagination crumble as our confidence fell. As the financial markets show over and over, often those two can be very different. They explain what we think will happen, not necessarily what will happen. And here is what may surprise you: If you track the stories investors and the financial media share, you’ll see that they are far better reflections of how we feel now than they are accurate predictions of the future. Hardware interface: A hologram projector needs input.A poor signal processing will lead to uneven rendering and a poorly transformed image render. This calculation helps render the projected image perfectly and hence the end result is a crisp clear image. Signal processing is an important step that involves a complex calculator. Signal processing: Since a hologram projector uses laser projections, the data of the projected image is first processed and then sent to the projecting display. This also helps in getting a depth effect on the reproduced image frame. The higher brightness offered by the hologram projectors helps in making the produced image frame visible to human eyes even in a room with good lighting conditions. The lower brightness of image frames tends to dissolve with the lighting of your room, resulting in poor image quality. ![]() The projection seems more accurate when the brightness of the produced frames is visible enough.

I have tried the easyGPS software recently and I can't see any way of handling mapping it brings up some waypoints that I loaded but the various controls for the software don't have any means of loading a map! It is very non-intuitive to me so far as maps are concerned. I had thought that you were currently using expertGPS and asking for further information about it now I see that you are considering using their 30 day trial. ![]() With that, I now am way back at step 1, knowing what I want and can do, but not knowing what to use. I was never a fan of Mapsource, with its clunky routing method. I still haven't mastered it's routing function to the level I had with S&T. S&T is no longer, and my 2700 series gps died, and also doesn't have a sd chip. I became very good with these programs, from my Iron Butt type rally experience. I've used several other programs, including gpsbabal. I have done a LOT of routing with mapping software and gps, using Streets & Trips and a 2700 series street pilot gps. digital mapping technology has no continuity to it between programs, the way something solid like a moto or a paper map does. It has a handlebar, two wheels, clutch on the handlebar, two brakes. No matter what the motorcycle, I can always operate it. This stuff is just a tool for me, not an occupation or passion. Again, grrrrr - technology always changing. I'm not a computer techie, so the depth of the search required to find the cache files was exceeding my abilities. I have google earth vs7, a tough one to find the cache files on. However, I still can't transfer map images. ![]() With google earth and the long discussion you linked, I have read through that and was hopeful, and found some of the routing/transfer information to be very helpful. Thanks for the link, I didn't know about that one. There is also a trial version of expertgps. Walkabout : I do know about the free version. I'm planning to use a sd card, but haven't explored that with this "new to me" gps unit. I do have OSM, but for some areas (Guatemala for one) there is not much mapping beyond the main roads, when comparing to google earth or other on line sites. Mapping will be severely limited as it seems that very old unit only has 24Mb max. It will be able to send some routes and tracks to your Garmin gpsmap 60. You could use Mapsource and install OSM maps into it on your computer. I also need to load maps to my Garmin 60, although OSM is one option. My ideal goal is to have something like Google Earth available on my computer without wifi, be able to use it on my computer for routing, and then transfer routes to my gps. I do like to use Google Earth, but without wifi, GE is not an option. I'd like to have a computer based mapping method that doesn't require wifi like Google Earth, then load tracks to my gps. ![]() Not sure if the Expert GPS map set is better than OSM. I have used OSM in Mexico, but I know it has limited detail in certain areas, like Guatemala rural areas for one. Download Guatemala Map Software for Your GPS I can't figure out if their maps are detailed in the more remote areas, more remote roads/trails. They appear to have a good map set available, and the map sets can be uploaded to your gps. Has anyone used Expert GPS Home to upload maps and create tracks for Central America travel?
